The Thirteen Vitolas: A Field Guide to Cigar Shapes and Sizes

A cigar's shape is not decoration. Length and ring gauge decide how much wrapper you taste relative to filler, how hot the smoke runs, and how long the evening lasts. The word for all of it is vitola.

Length and ring gauge

Length is measured in inches (or millimetres). Ring gauge is diameter in 64ths of an inch: a 50 ring is 50/64", just over three-quarters of an inch. Dimensions below are typical; every maker interprets them slightly differently.

Parejos: the straight-sided family

VitolaTypical sizeSmoke time
Petit Corona4½" × 4230–40 min
Corona5½" × 4245–60 min
Corona Gorda5⅝" × 4660–75 min
Lonsdale6½" × 4260–80 min
Lancero7½" × 3860–90 min
Robusto5" × 5045–60 min
Toro6" × 5260–90 min
Churchill7" × 4790–120 min
Double Corona7⅝" × 49100–150 min

Slender parejos are wrapper-forward and intense; fatter ones run cooler and emphasize the filler blend.

Figurados: the shaped family

VitolaTypical sizeCharacter
Torpedo6⅛" × 52Pointed head concentrates the smoke
Belicoso5½" × 52Short, rounded taper
Pyramid6⅛" × 52Even taper, foot to head
Perfecto5" × 48Tapered at both ends

Why we draw them to scale

In Humidor Luxe every one of these thirteen shapes is rendered true to scale against the others. It sounds like a detail. It changes how a collection feels: your humidor stops being a list and starts being a shelf.

Explore each shape in depth in the Vitola Guide.
