The 65–72% Rule: A Collector's Guide to Humidor Humidity

What humidity should a humidor be? Why 65–72% RH at 65–70°F, what happens outside that range, how to season, calibrate and monitor your humidor.

The 65–72% Rule: A Collector's Guide to Humidor Humidity

Ask ten tobacconists for the right humidity and you will hear ten numbers, nearly all between 65 and 72 percent. That range isn't folklore. It is the window in which a cigar's leaf stays supple, burns evenly and ages gracefully.

Why humidity matters

Tobacco is hygroscopic: it gives up and absorbs moisture until it reaches equilibrium with the air around it. Too dry and the oils that carry flavor evaporate, the wrapper cracks and the burn races hot. Too wet and the draw tightens, the burn tunnels or canoes, and above roughly 75% you invite mold.

<60%Dry: cracking, harsh, fast burn
62–65%Drier, crisp burn: many prefer for large ring gauges
65–70%The classic sweet spot
>72%Damp: tight draw, mold risk rising

Temperature is half the story

Relative humidity is relative to temperature. Aim for roughly 65–70°F (18–21°C). Above about 75°F, especially with high humidity, the conditions favor tobacco beetle hatching (Lasioderma serricorne), the collector's quiet nightmare.

Season before you store

A new wooden humidor needs seasoning: the Spanish cedar lining must absorb moisture before it stops pulling it from your cigars. Place a humidification source inside, close the lid, and let it stabilize over several days before loading. Follow the manufacturer's directions.

Calibrate your hygrometer

Analog dial hygrometers are notorious for drifting. Test any instrument against a known reference, such as a two-way humidity pack calibration kit or a salt test, and note the offset. Digital sensors are generally more consistent, but verifying is still good practice.

Monitor, don't guess

The real danger is the slow drift you don't see: a heating season, a dried-out humidification device, a lid that no longer seals. Continuous monitoring turns that drift into a chart and an alert.

  • With a sensor: Humidor Luxe reads SensorPush sensors you own and emails you when readings leave your chosen range.
  • Without one: log readings manually or import a CSV, and the charts still tell the story.

The short version

TargetRange
Relative humidity65–72% (many prefer 65–69%)
Temperature65–70°F / 18–21°C
Worry above75% RH or 75°F
